Keep Your Eyes on This
• The defending national champions are 0-2. Is it time for QB Bo Levi Mitchell and No. 10 Eastern Washington to panic? In what many are calling a must-win game for the Eagles, they will travel to No. 11 Montana to take on a Grizzlies team which is 1-1. EWU has struggled in the series against the Grizz. Despite winning last year’s contest — the debut of the red turf — the Eagles are just 11-26 all-time against their Big Sky rival. Montana has won 89 percent of its games at Washington-Grizzly Stadium — an impressive record of 164-21 — since it opened in 1987. EWU has won four of the 11 meetings there, with victories in 2005, 1997, 1992 and 1990.
• In the only other matchup between ranked teams, No. 14 James Madison travels to No. 20 Liberty for a non-conference in-state clash. Both teams rebounded from opening-week losses to FBS teams with victories last weekend. Liberty throttled Robert Morris while JMU barely got past Central Connecticut State 14-9 in the home opener. The Flames are seeking their 10th consecutive victory at home, but the Dukes are looking to add to their five-game win streak in the all-time series.
• The strangest start to the 2011 season — in any level of football — could be No. 24 Sacramento State. Following an opening week overtime win at Oregon State, the Hornets lost 35-14 at Southern Utah last week. Now, Sac State will hit the road for a third consecutive game as it opens Big Sky play at Weber State. The Wildcats’ 0-2 start is a little deceiving, as they have faced two FBS teams on the road — falling to Wyoming and Utah State. The Hornets have never won in Ogden, going 0-7.
• One of the oldest series in college sports is renewed this Saturday when No. 19 Lehigh travels to New Jersey to take on Princeton. The Mountain Hawks and Tigers met for the first time on the gridiron in 1887, with Lehigh holding a 39-13-2 edge. Despite Princeton going 1-9 a year ago, the Hawks better be careful. Princeton won the last meeting at home 10-7 in 2008.
